William "Bill" James Deery Jr. PhD\nAugust 6, 1926 to July 18, 2018\nWilliam "Bill" J. Deery, Jr. was born in Philadelphia on August 6th, 1926, to William James and Mary (Taggart) Deery. He attended grade school at St. Benedict's, and was a graduate of North Catholic HS. He graduated from LaSalle University in 1950 with a BA degree in Education. Bill completed his Masters in Education at Temple University. He later earned his Doctorate in Education from the University of Sarasota. Bill was a WWII veteran who served in the US Navy aboard the USS Hampton, a troop carrier. He was in the South Pacific when the atom bomb was deployed in Hiroshima/Nagasaki, Japan. Bill's teaching career started as an English/Reading Teacher at Benjamin Franklin HS. He was later selected, with four teacher candidates, to lay the groundwork for a Special Education program for the public schools in the Philadelphia School District. He went on for more coursework in the psychology of special needs children. In June of 1977, he became a Supervisor of Special Education in District 8 of the Philadelphia School system. Starting in 1955, Bill became part of the Boy scouting movement (of the BSA) in the Philadelphia Council, and served as Commissioner, Program Director, then later Administrative Director, at Hart Scout Reservation, Green Lane, PA. His family was able to join him for 17 summers at Camp Hart. Bill served as Vice-President on the LaSalle University Alumni Committee in 1973. He also shared his expertise and wisdom serving on the board of Benjamin Rush Center, which served mentally and physically handicapped people in Northeast Philadelphia in the 80's. Bill was also a member of the PSERS (Philadelphia School Employees Retired System). He was a member of Our Lady of Calvary Church for 46 years. Bill's passions in life were golf, horseracing, and sports (especially the Boston Red Sox, Dallas Cowboys, Phillies and Eagles). He loved teams that were winners! He enjoyed reading, Irish music, the Gaelic language (which he took lessons from at the Irish Center in Chestnut Hill in 1963), and travelling with his wife, Dorothy, to visit his children, who live far and wide.\nBill is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Dorothy Rose (nee Agzigian) Deery, his children, Bill (of Houston), David, Susan, and son-in-law, Peter (Lagosky) of Toronto, Canada, Sandy and her dog, Itzy, (of Spokane), grandchildren, Stephanie (of Toronto) and Peter (of Calgary, Alberta), and sister, Mary (Deery) Ippoliti, and her husband, Ralph Ippoliti, and his beloved brother, Ron (Deery), his wife Helen (Fazio) Deery, both now deceased. Bill leaves a legacy of cherished nieces and nephews, friendships, as well as rich, and too numerous to mention relationships, that span an almost 92 year well lived life. His love was like the dawn brightening our lives. Bill, your spirit is alive, and dwells within our hearts.
